A Look at the History of Chevy Trucks
Chevy trucks have a long history of durability, reliability, and capability, from the early C/K days to the present Silverado lineup. In fact, the Chevy pickup truck story starts even earlier: nearly 100 years ago, to be exact. In 1918, Chevy introduced its first ever pickup truck, the One-Ton. With an MSRP of around $1,325, the One-Tone offered 36 horsepower via a 4-cylinder 224 cubic-inch engine and a choice of two body styles: the Chassis and the Express.
The first real bed-style pickup entered the scene in 1938. This half-ton, 118.375-inch long beauty offered whitewall tires and a 75.75-inch truck bed. With a straight-six engine that delivered 78 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque, this stylish Chevy pickup could have been yours for just $592. In 1947, the 3100 Series joined the lineup. With seating for three, an in-dash radio, and rounded fenders, the 3100 Series incorporated design lines that are recognizable even in today’s Silverado lineup.
By 1967, Chevy began focusing on larger full-size pickup body styles. The late 60s ushered in the very first C/K Series, with a power boost to 153 horsepower and 255-lb-ft of torque via a 292 cubic-inch inline-six. An optional big-block V8 joined the lineup for buyers seeking additional power. Design cues followed a simpler and boxier exterior aesthetic, and the cabin remained utilitarian. In 1973, Chevy introduced the first ever one-ton “Dually” with four rear tires.
For the 1999 model year, Chevy dropped the C/K name and transformed its full-size lineup into an all-new, first- generation Silverado. Since then, the Silverado has undergone three more major redesigns and is currently in its fourth generation. In addition to its full-size pickup truck lineup, Chevy has also offered a mid-size option since the early 1970s; the first model, the LUV, stayed in the lineup from 1972 until 2005. The LUV was overlapped by the S10, which Chevy produced from 1982 until 2004. Currently, the Colorado is Chevy’s mid-size pickup option.
Chevy's 2021 LineupThe 2021 Chevy pickup lineup is a robust range of body sizes, powertrains, and capabilities. Designed to offer an option for every buyer–from city dwellers to job site foreman–the range of choices spans from the mid-$20,000 Colorado to a fully-loaded Silverado 1500 High Country 4x4 that creeps into the $70,000 range, and everything in- between. Heavy-duty truck buyers will appreciate the 36,000 pounds of trailering capability and 7,442 pounds of payload hauling available on the one-ton 3500HD.
The mid-size 2021 Colorado is big on capability, too, offering a max towing capability of 7,700 pounds and a max payload of 1,550 pounds. It’s also surprisingly fuel efficient, thanks to a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine that offers 20 RICHARD LUCAS CHEVROLET MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway. The Colorado is available in multiple trims, including the entry WT, the LT, the off-roading Z71, and the high-end trail-ready ZR2. Three available engines - a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, a 3.6-liter DOHC V6, and a powerful Duramax 2.8-liter Turbo Diesel–give buyers the freedom to dial in the power they need.
The 2021 Silverado full-size lineup is all-new and completely redesigned. In its fourth generation, the Silverado delivers big on capability, with a max towing capability of 13,300 pounds and a whopping six different engines to pick from, offering up to 460 lb-ft of torque. All-new trailer towing technology converts your smartphone into a control hub, making hitching and towing easier, safer, and more precise. Choose from three cab styles, depending on trim: a two-door regular cab, a double cab, or a crew cab with four full-size doors.
