CHEVROLET HISTORY

For over 100 years, Chevrolet has been an American icon. Providing drivers with the best of the automotive industry since it was founded, Chevrolet vehicles have always been known for their quality and versatility. From the Sport Roadster to the Volt, each Chevy is designed with the latest and greatest technology in the industry.

Speed and performance have always been a part of Chevrolet. Swiss race car driver and engineer Louis Chevrolet founded the company with William C. Durant, founder of General Motors, on November 3, 1911. Seated in the heart of Detroit, Chevrolet was a leader in the automotive industry. Early Chevys came at a high cost, but their quality and design were regarded as well worth it. However, Durant recognized the value of affordable, entry-level vehicles and steered the company in that direction. This decision helped Chevy become a household name.

Though the company suffered during the Great Depression, it was able to come back even stronger than before. Into the 1950s and 1960s, Chevy vehicles became staples of American life. Chevys lined the driveways of America. Models like the Corvette, founded in 1953, drove their way into popular culture. Many of these models remain in the current Chevy lineup.

Today, Chevrolet is still a leader in innovation and automotive trends. In 2010, Chevrolet produced the Chevy Volt, the world’s first mass-produced electric vehicle with gas-powered extended range. The first vehicle of its kind, the Volt garnered praise for its unprecedented design. Despite hard times affecting Detroit and the American automotive industry, Chevrolet has continued to emerge as a leader in cars, trucks and SUVs.
